Special lecture on practice of international humanitarian law

On Tuesday, February 7, a special lecture was given in the Communicative English class, which is in charge of Prof. Yuko Uesugi. The invited lecturer was Dr. Jaroslav Krasny (Jarek), who lives in Hiroshima and works for The Center for Peace, Hiroshima University (CPHU). Dr. Krasny received his doctorate in international humanitarian law from Hiroshima University and his master’s degree from University of Geneva last year. He is fluent in six languages and is surely a role model for global professionals.

The objective of this class is to learn about the SDGs in English using the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) method. The class is designed to increase students' opportunities to use English in a practical way and to be exposed to authentic materials rather than just learning from textbooks.

This time, Dr. Krasny especially spoke about SDGs 16, "Peace and Justice for All," in English, incorporating his own experiences in the practice of international humanitarian law.

What was particularly impressive in his lecture were his words: "Weapons do not kill people, but people and people's minds kill people," "Be proactive. If not, you will not gain anything," and "Education is the most important factor for peace.

Dr. Krasny explained a lot of information about international humanitarian law from his own experiences in an easy-to-understand manner, using pictures he took. The students listened to his talk with great interest and effort, taking notes, nodding their heads, and asking him passionate questions at the end. This precious opportunity to learn directly from a person who actually works in the international community must have increased the students' interest in and understanding of the SDGs.
