Title of Lecture

Tatenaoshi: Renovating Lives, Buildings, and Society

Speaker

President, Renovate Japan Ltd., Mr. KAI Takayuki

Mr. KAI explained that "Tatenaoshi: Renovating Lives, Buildings, and the Society" is housing for the poor and a grave issue in Japan and the world.

As governments struggle to solve the housing issue, Renovate Japan Ltd., tackles that as a social enterprise by making use of the renovation process of vacant buildings. This idea that they call “Tatenaoshi” not only greatly reduces the tradeoff between business profits and social action, but reinforces the power of local communities. Mr. KAI thinks it also solves the problem of vacant houses, which is another social issue that is growing in Japan. The Tatenaoshi projects in his company focus on rescuing people who lost their jobs and homes through unemployment or domestic violence, by providing them a shelter that makes use of buildings during renovation as they are not yet on the market. In addition to his background and origins, Mr. KAI, the founder of Renovate Japan Ltd., discussed the issue of poverty in Japanese society and talked about his philosophy of “Tatenaoshi” and the practical examples he has faced so far with his model.

Throughout the lecture, the participating students actively shared their thoughts, for example one student commented “I think the goal aligns very well with our university goals too so it was nice to see what potential we have too for our future”.

We greatly appreciate Mr. KAI and his valuable lecture.
